The elegant Georgian town of Royal Tunbridge Wells was made famous by the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in 1606. Visitors flocked to sample the pure waters and Tunbridge Wells blossomed as a spa town until the late 19th century.
The best part to visit is the famous Pantiles - a colonnaded walkway which used to be the most fashionable place to be seen. The Upper Walks was frequented by the great and good while everyone else used the Lower Walks. Thankfully, these days it's much more relaxed, with a range of speciality shops and boutiques for everyone to enjoy. The spring which brought such fortune to the town still exists at the northern end of the Pantiles. |
