The white cliffs of Dover are a potent symbol of England and perched on them is Dover Castle.
Dover was a key target during both world wars and in the castle visitors can explore the secret underground tunnels known as Hellfire Corner. In the town of Dover itself the White Cliffs Experience traces the history of this important port.
The cliffs, made from chalk deposits, are best viewed from the English Channel but there are many interesting walks across the top of them. The area is home to orchids and many birds.
Dover is also one of the world's busiest sea ports and from here travellers can take the ferry to France and Belgium. |
