Heartbeat is set in Goathland, many of us know it under the fictional name of Aidensfield however. A visit to Goathland is akin to entering a real life film set, the scenery and the buildings will nearly all be instantly recognisable to visitors who watch the programme, and it’s only the modern day traffic and cars which seem to pull you back into the real world.
The train station is an important part of the series with many new characters (villainous or otherwise) chosing to make an entrance or an exit from the show under steam power. Indeed, lovable local scoundrel Vernon Scripps made his exit from the show in this manner. The rail line and the station have been restored and it’s possible to travel by steam around the moors just as your favourite characters have done in the past
Further afield, the Aidensfield ‘bobby’ and the village youth tend to find themselves in the village of Whitby, either to make arrests or for entertainment. Make you way through the winding streets on the east side of the river and up the East Cliff to the ruined Abbey which dominates the skyline. The Abbey was the scene of Bram Stoker’s book Dracula, and if it’s a taste of the spooky that you want to experience then join a ghost tour around the town. Accomodation in Whitby is plentiful and varied.
Whilst in the area it would be a shame not to visit Robin Hoods Bay, a picturesque little village at the bottom of a cliff, and a beautiful Bay which marks the end of Wainwright's Way from the West to the East of England. |
