Greater Manchester is made up of 10 boroughs - all places which have their own distinct identity and don't welcome being lumped in as part of the dominating city of Manchester.
Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan all retain their own identities - indeed Salford was a city long before Manchester.
Salford now attracts tourists thanks to the re-development of Salford Quay but it's best known as the 'smoky old town' featured in artist L.S. Lowry's matchstick men paintings.
For visitors Manchester City is the main attraction, with innovative museums, a world renowned football club and lively nightclub scene.
