North East
The North East of Britain has an industrial feel about it. Here, shipbuilding, steel and mining shaped the area for many years.
However, with the inevitable decline in such heavy industries the area is now looking at the future in a different light, attracting more varied businesses and considering tourism possibilities.
Some places, like Whitley Bay and Bridlington are traditional seaside towns with beaches, candy floss and amusements while others like Sunderland have had to work a lot harder to convince tourists to visit.
Newcastle is a buzzing city, full of life and a great place for a fun few days.
But the North East also has quieter places - the walks through the almost deserted Yorkshire Wolds and the grandeur of Durham, where Prince Bishops used to rule the area almost as an independent state.
For a good interpretation of the industrial heritage of the North East, there's nowhere better to start than the North of England Open Air Museum in County Durham. It shows that industrial heritage need not be boring but brings our ancestors to life through a recreated village.
